Push-Fit or Barbed Fittings?

Campervan plumbing tends to divide into two camps. One uses semi-rigid pipe pushed into quick-connect fittings; the other uses flexible reinforced hose pushed over a barbed fitting and secured with a clip. Both can produce a perfectly reliable water system, and both are still widely used.
The difference becomes clearer when you stop asking which fitting is best and instead look at where it is being fitted. A long pipe run through a van has different requirements from the short connection beside a vibrating water pump. Once the system is considered in sections, there is a good reason why many modern installations end up using a little of both.
Push-fit makes sense for most of the fixed plumbing
For the main pipe runs around a campervan or motorhome, push-fit has become the obvious choice.
Semi-rigid pipe holds its shape, routes neatly through cupboards and furniture and is less inclined to sag or kink than flexible hose. Connections are straightforward too: cut the pipe square, push it fully into the fitting and the internal seal and gripping mechanism do the rest.
There is no hose to force over a fitting and no clip to position and tighten.
That simplicity becomes more valuable as the system grows. A basic installation might only have a pump and kitchen tap, but add a shower, water heater, toilet supply and external shower point and there can quickly be dozens of connections hidden around the vehicle.
Making those connections quickly is useful. Being able to get back to them later is arguably more useful still.
Campervan water systems rarely stay exactly as they were built
A water system that looks finished today has a habit of changing.
An accumulator gets added to quieten the pump. An external shower point goes in. A water heater is replaced. A leaking tap needs removing. Perhaps the whole conversion simply evolves as the owner discovers what works after a few trips away.
With push-fit, a connection can usually be released and remade without cutting the pipe or replacing the fitting. That makes alterations considerably less disruptive.
It also means components such as pumps and water heaters can be isolated and removed without dismantling large sections of plumbing around them.
For a self-build in particular, that flexibility is worth considering. The first layout does not have to be the final one.
Flexible hose still has one job it does particularly well
A water pump is not a static piece of plumbing. Its motor and diaphragm create vibration whenever it runs, and connecting it directly to rigid pipe can allow some of that vibration to travel into the vehicle.
Cupboards, furniture panels and floors can then do a surprisingly good job of amplifying it.
A short length of flexible reinforced hose around the pump can help isolate that movement rather than passing it straight into the fixed plumbing. It can also make the pump easier to position where space is tight and perfectly aligned connections are difficult.
The same reasoning can apply around an accumulator.
This is why seeing flexible hose in an otherwise push-fit installation does not necessarily mean somebody changed plumbing systems halfway through the job. It can be a deliberate choice: flexible where movement needs absorbing, semi-rigid where the plumbing needs routing.
Between the tank and pump, either system can work
The suction side of the pump is slightly different.
There is no particular need to run flexible hose all the way from the fresh water tank simply because the pump itself has hose connections. Equally, a short flexible section can make routing and servicing easier depending on where the tank and pump sit.
What matters more is avoiding restrictions and air leaks.
A pump trying to draw water through a kinked hose, an undersized pipe or a poorly sealed connection can struggle regardless of which plumbing system was chosen.
The route from the tank should therefore be reasonably direct, correctly sized and securely sealed. Once past the pump, transitioning into semi-rigid push-fit pipe is a straightforward way of distributing water around the rest of the vehicle.
Barbed fittings are cheap, but the fitting isn't the whole connection
Look at the price of an individual fitting and barbed plumbing can appear to be the cheaper system.
But a barbed fitting needs flexible reinforced hose, and each connection normally needs a suitable hose clip as well. Multiply that across an entire conversion and the difference begins to narrow.
There is also the installation time to consider.
Every hose needs cutting, pushing fully over its barb and securing correctly with a clip. In an accessible location that is hardly difficult. Behind a cupboard with just enough room for one hand and a screwdriver, it becomes less appealing.
Push-fit pipe costs relatively little, and making the connection requires no additional clip. Across a complete installation, the overall cost of the two approaches can therefore be closer than the fitting prices initially suggest.
Whichever system you choose, the connection still needs making properly
Push-fit is easy to install, but it is not impossible to install badly.
The pipe needs to be cut cleanly and squarely rather than crushed or cut at an angle, and it must be pushed fully home into the fitting. Damaged or scratched pipe around the sealing surface can also cause problems.
Barbed fittings have their own requirements. The hose needs to match the barb correctly and the clip needs to be positioned and tightened sufficiently to seal without damaging the hose underneath it.
Neither system compensates for a poor connection.
It is also worth avoiding unnecessary changes between pipe types. Every adaptor added to a water system introduces another joint, and every joint is another potential place for a leak.
The best system may use both
For most modern campervan and motorhome installations, semi-rigid push-fit pipe makes sense as the backbone of the fresh water system. It is neat, quick to install, difficult to kink and easy to alter when something changes later.
That does not make flexible hose obsolete.
A short flexible connection around the pump can help with vibration and awkward positioning, while push-fit takes over for the longer fixed runs to taps, showers, toilets and water heaters.
Rather than choosing one system and insisting it goes everywhere, it makes more sense to use each where its particular characteristics are useful.
Flexible hose where the system needs to move; push-fit pipe where it doesn't.
Build the plumbing around that principle and you end up with a water system that is not only straightforward to install, but much easier to live with when something inevitably needs changing a few years down the road.
